Homeopathy Tips for 4/19/11 Licensing and Certfication in the USA

The most common question I receive is about getting certified in homeopathy and being able to practice legally. Certification and Licensure are completely different in Homeopathy. Certification is to certify. It amounts to attesting to something. Certification can come from any school or certifying organization as to certifying the completion of a course or educational requirements.

Along with certification there is usually a title or credential that the applicant will have earned. There are many titles in circulation today that schools and organizations have created to attest to their applicant’s successful completion of the requirements. These certified credentials are not recognized by any State or Federal Regulating Body and only serve to bring legitimacy to the Homeopath.

The title most recognized in the world is RSHom. It comes from the Registered Society of Homeopaths in the UK. This title is the oldest and most respected title and is used by more Classical Homeopaths in the most countries around the globe. In North America we have the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH) www.homeopathy.org which is an organization focused on bringing support for Homeopaths and representing Homeopathy as a profession. NASH will issue RSHom (NA) for their successful applicants.

NASH has enlisted the services of the Council for Homeopathic Certification (CHC) www.homeopathicdirectory.com to be the testing agency for their applicants. The CHC also issues a credential Certified Classical Homeopath (CCH) that is becoming more popular as Homeopathy is more recognized in North America.

Neither of these titles nor any other title, if not issued by a State or Federal Agency is a license to practice Homeopathy. Licensing is through the individual states and their legislation or laws concerning the practice of Medicine or Homeopathy in particular.

Licensing is a privilege granted by law to engage in an activity that is regulated by a Governing Board controlled by State legislation.

Some states have passed legislation that is favorable to alternative medicine and allows the practice of Homeopathy under certain conditions. The National Health Freedom Coalition, www.nationalhealthfreedom.org is an organization committed to making alternative healing available to the public. They work at a grass roots level to change laws in states to allow the consumer the right to seek health care of their choice. For the most current status of their progress and current state laws, visit their website. For the state you wish to practice in it is imperative that you investigate current legislation and find out what your state allows concerning the practice of medicine or homeopathy in particular.

NASH and the CHC have worked hard to bring legitimacy to Homeopathy in North America. The problem with the credentialing of Homeopaths is the level of experience needed to pass a test. This is also a problem with most schools of Homeopathy today. A lot of focus is directed to the academic and didactic learning about Homeopathy with the intention of passing a test. The real challenge of being a Homeopath is not addressed and the newly credentialed homeopath goes out into the world to practice but does not have the experience. This is especially true of correspondence courses offering a credential.

This is why Resonance School of Homeopathy is different than other schools. All teaching is with live cases and follow-ups from day one. This is the way to get the experience you need to go out into the world and be a Homeopath. It is one thing to learn about Homeopathy and pass a test. It is quite another to be a Homeopath starting as a professional with experience. All students at Resonance School of Homeopathy are student/practitioners and have the privilege of inviting clients to class to have their case taken. Each class weekend you will see and participate in at least 4 new cases and follow-ups with previous clients. This is the best way to learn Homeopathy; by doing it. The focus of our school is not in learning about Homeopathy and test taking. It is about being a Homeopath and getting the experience you need to go out in the world prepared to really help people with Homeopathy.

One of the requirements for the CHC exam is all education must come from teachers who have passed the CHC exam themselves. Robert Field has been certified and carries the credential CCH, RSHom(NA), APH (Advanced Practitioner of Homeopathy, Nevada) and CTHom (Certified Trained Homeopath) from ESSH School of Homeopathy – Vega Rozenberg.

The APH certificate from Nevada is not a license to practice medicine but a legal recognition certifying an individual in Homeopathy and allowing practice within certain State Regulations. Nevada is one of only a few states that have State Boards regulating Homeopathy. Resonance School of Homeopathy is an accredited school with the Nevada Homeopathic Board of Medical Examiners (NVBHME) www.nvbhme.com and all training is qualified with the NVBHME as training for the titles of HMD (Homeopathic Medical Doctor), APH (Advanced Practitioner of Homeopathy and HA (Homeopathic Assistant). It is legal for all three credentials to prescribe Homeopathic medicines in Nevada.

Resonance School of Homeopathy will issue a Certificate of Completion of hours to all students; Online Students as well as those students who attend live. Only those students who have completed the requirements and have attended enough classes for Robert Field to have observed their skills in prescribing, case management, case understanding, and their own evolution will receive a Diploma certifying them as a Trained Homeopath. This is different than hours of completion. This certificate is attesting to a student’s proficiency and readiness to go out into the world and start their career as a professional Homeopath. It is not easily attained.

    Dear Dr.Robert,
Thank you for your write-up on certification on the subject of homoeopathy. Many of us do not have legal certificate, though we know many things better than those possess the requisite degree.I did study homoeopathy in the lone degree college at that time in our country but due to some unavoidable reasons i could not sit for final exam resulting in non-qualification as a qualified homoeopath. That remains the tragedy.
but for more than two years I am a regular student of RESONANCE SCHOOL OF HOMOEOPATHY.My question to you when I will qualify for a certificate from your school of Homoeopathy.

      Hi A M Howlader,
This newletter is not a course. It is a free publication I offer to the public. You must enroll and take the course from Resonance School of Homeopathy to qualify for a Certificate of Hours of Completion. This newsletter is NOT the course work.

    Respected Dr.Robert,

Thank you once again for the above invalueable tips on
licensing & certification in the U.S.A. In general the
homeopaths & the students outside the U.S.A & Canada are
very much interested to learn & obtain Homeopathic degree
from the mentioned countries. But it is difficult how to
know about it.So,it is a great opportunity to know all
about the systems, courses & how to get license from the
above article. The students particularly from the Asian
African countries are very much interested to have degrees
from the U.S.A.One question has arisen into my mind that
the system of getting license for practising Homeopathy
is different in different states. Can there be not a central
regulating Athority who shall be responsible for the overall development of Homeopathy & giving license for
private practise in the U.S.A.You know that the students
& the Homeopaths in these countries are very week financially although they have eagerness to learn Homeopathy in the perfect way which is not available
in most of the countries. Can any system be developed,so that these students can get an opportunity to learn
    Homeopathy from your country.
    Thanking you once again,

    Kh.Mahbubur Rahman

    Hello Doctor Robert!

I yearn to register and either come to USA to take the course directly or an online delivery but i tried the online registration but it did not go through.

I have just completed my MBA in Marketing in late 2010 and i practice homeopathy without qualification in Ghana for a living which is obviously dangerous due to lack of license.
Even though i have been somehow successful and lucky, i know for a fact that i lack “the critical success criteria” which is LICENSING.

Please endeavor to make it easy for me to enter your register as soon as now.

Thank you for this important subject.

Thank you for providing this review of credentialing. I have found that the majority of consumers and practitioners are confused about this point and want to point out that any licensed practitioner can take a weekend course and claim to be certified in homeopathy. This is true of licensed personnel looking for monetary, scholarly, or personal gain. I have seen any doctors and nurses, licensed through the state board, claim to be homeopaths based on very limited training. I find many of these practitoners are seeking a gimmick with which to bring clients into their practice in order to increase revenue. Exorbitant medical school debt, clinical overhead, and malpractice insurance all contribute to this demand for monetary gain. More often than not, these individuals are naturopaths and chiropractors. I feel that this brings into question the scope of practice that is ultimately the hospice of state licensing boards. This presents an argument for demanding that federal and state legislature set standards for scope of practice in homeopathy. The difficulty here is that homeopathy is “not approved by the FDA and is not intended to treat or cure”. While the NCCAM is attempting to provide some regulation, without private interest with private capital investment, the level evidence needed to provide FDA standards of safety and efficacy regarding homeopathy this is not likely to occur.
I think the important point here is that there are many people who carry a “license” who are also “credentialed” in homeopathy who ultimately have no-one governing their practice of homeopathy provided that use the caveat “not intended to cure or treat”. I see many patients pay exorbitant amounts of money to practitioners only to receive novice therapy. Likewise, I see people desperately in need homeopathy go without treatment because practitioners are unwilling to waive practitioner fees. Consumer and practitioners need to be aware.
The aforementioned argument is why I am so supportive of Resonance School of Homeopathy and Robert Field, a strong advocate of free health care, and also evidence based practice. I hope that this provides meaningful insight to those who are looking into credentialling and/or finding a practitioner.

Hi Jess, Thanks for your wonderful insights. I couldn’t agree with you more. Because homeopathy requires such dedication and time to really master, we are having fewer and fewer real homeopaths. Being such individualized medicine, it requires that the homeopath have a level of competetance that is very high. Unfortunatley the evaluation process is very limited, and like you said, a few hours of homeopathic education does not make a homeopath. Thanks for your support.

I am currently in India studying with a third-generation classical homeopathic master, just for reason you are describing- to learn the art of prescribing. Every evening we see 8-30 cases and before, between and after patients, we discuss the practical application of philosophy of the homeopathic masters of the past- Kent, Roberts, etc. Sylphur has 4,000 sx! All the rx have many sx but here I see what the prescribing sx are, what the curative sx are in each medicine we use. I don’t know what kind of score this doctor would get on the CHC exams but I do know that his results are excellent.
    Thanks for the article.
