Homeopathy Tips for 11/25/08 Dengue Fever

For any of you who live in the tropics or have travelled there you may have encountered Dengue Fever. Also known as “Break-bone Fever”, if you’ve had it you will probably always remember it. It is one of the more common tropical diseases and can be effectively treated with homeopathy. It can reach epidemic proportions and has a similar distribution as Malaria. It also is spread by infection from the bite of a mosquito.

Dengue is a Spanish word meaning prudery. This name is applicable to this disease because of the fact that in Dengue Fever there is stiffness of the neck and shoulders, portraying the look of one with a reserved state and excess strictness of manners. The physical restriction of movement creates a posture that one could assume was of a prude.  It also produces high fever, severe pains in the bones and joints accompanied with swelling and in some cases hemorrhages with bleeding under the skin, from the gums, nosebleed or internal bleeding. Symptoms can be very severe but fatalities are rare and convalescence can be prolonged.

The period of incubation is from 3 to 14 days before the onset of first symptoms. The attack comes on suddenly with chills and a fever that can often rise to 106 degrees F. Symptoms include frontal headache, severe muscle and back bone pain, weakness and a sensation of tastelessness, dry tongue and constipation. Many have nausea, vomiting and rash that can appear 3 to 5 days after the fever and spread to the torso, arms legs and face. The fever usually runs from 102 to 105 degrees F. and lasts for three to five days after which recovery is usually complete. Sometimes though symptoms can be tenacious and recovery can take months, especially if there have been more than one infection in the individual.

Homeopathy can help and the genus epidemicus remedy is usually Eupatorium Perfoliatum (Bone Set) because many suffers experience such agonizing bone pains. Ipecac can also be useful when there is hemorrhage.

         Remedies to consider also are;

Arsenicum Album – Great debility and restlessness with great thirst but drinks only a little at a time and  often.

Baptisia – When there is great malaise and languor, but the person feels as if their body is double and they must try to collect themselves in the bed. It is very useful in the recovery phase also when there is great weakness.

Bryonia – When the person does not want to move and any movement aggravates. Joints can be hot and swollen and better from pressure.

Gelsemium – Feels sore and bruised all over and the muscles refuse to obey the will. Thirstlessness and chilly.

Pyrogeneum – Chill follower by fever that is very high. Great delirium and abnormally slow pulse.

Rhus Toxicodendron – Whole body painful. Puffiness of the joints, better for movement. The rash can sometimes be cured with Rhus Tox.

Eupatorium Perfoliatum – Great soreness and aching of the body with deep aching pains in the bones. The muscles can sometimes feel as if torn from the bone.

Other remedies to consider are Ipecac, Lachesis, Hamamelis, Crotalus Horridus, Ferrum Metallicum, and Secale when bleeding is present. China Officianalis and Baptisia may help when recovery is slow and accompanied by great weakness.

As with most acute prescribing the 30c and 200c potencies are usually the best to start out with. Repetition may be needed often depending on the duration of the response.

Always consider Dengue Fever in the differential diagnosis of any person who has fever and a history of travel to a tropical area within the last 2 weeks prior to the onset of symptoms. Clinical tests are available but must be interpreted with care. Acetaminophen products are usually prescribed for the management of fever. Aspirin should be avoided because of it’s anti-coagulant properties and the possibility of hemorrhage.

In the end nothing can treat Dengue Fever like homeopathy. Always take the case and prescribe the best remedy for the person. As always the prescription will be for the whole person and not just their physical symptoms only.

Thanks for sending a vital information regarding DENGUE fever. The medicines you have mentioned are exceedingly well. Yet if we collect the total picture of the fever then it would be helpful for all of the homeopathic practitioners to find a well selected medicine. I mean the time modality, chill, heat, sweat, thirst and even character of the tongue, whether he wants to cover or uncover associated with restlessness / tranquility and some mental conditions like company desires for or aversion to company all these symptoms will help to find a similimum for any kind of fever.
Once I have used stramomium in a fever lasting fourdays only after getting a clear indications from his parents that during that time the child asked his mother to tell the story about various goddesses. This symptom and a time modality helped me to select the medicine. Even desire for particular food also helps along with the present fever condition.

    Warm regards

    Hi Debasish,
I agree with your comments. As I mentioned in the last line it is important to still take the case and prescribe to the individual.
Thanks again for your comments and participation. It is homeopaths like yourself who make this newsletter a success.

You have written above about the healing that homeopathic medicines provide to this increasingly common serious infectious disease. However, you have not mentioned how many people with dengue fever YOU have treated.
I too am a serious advocate for homeopathy, but “bragging” needs evidence. Can you write something about the evidence you have? I assume that you don’t see many cases in Nevada…in any case, please shine light on this important issue.

    Hi Dana,
Since I have never personnally met you I wonder why the contentious attitude towards me in your comments. Is there somewhere I have said in the newsletter that I have taken “bragging rights” as you say. Why do you question me whether I have seen Dengue fever in Nevada? Are there specific boundaries for the sharing of homeopathic information that I am not recognizing? Please read the two comments before yours, they express gratitude and timeliness of this article. Then please read the ones following this. These comments benefit everyone and provide a wonderful forum for sharing. This is the reason for this newsletter and I am grateful for everyones participation. Please enjoy the newsletter and learn all you can. This is for the benefit of everyone.

As per the guidelines laid down by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the Organon a Genus epidemics has to be found out in the specific area and it could be the best to be found out in the specific area and it could be the best prophylactic remedy.

Source: ORGANON OF MEDICINE Aphorism 100-102

    § 100

In investigating the totality of the symptoms of epidemic and sporadic diseases it is quite immaterial whether or not something similar has ever appeared in the world before under the same or any other name. The novelty or peculiarity of a disease of that kind makes no difference either in the mode of examining or of treating it, as the physician must any way regard to pure picture of every prevailing disease as if it were something new and unknown, and investigate it thoroughly for itself, if he desire to practice medicine in a real and radical manner, never substituting conjecture for actual observation, never taking for granted that the case of disease before him is already wholly or partially known, but always carefully examining it in all its phases; and this mode of procedure is all the more requisite in such cases, as a careful examination will show that every prevailing disease is in many respects a phenomenon of a unique character, differing vastly from all previous epidemics, to which certain names have been falsely applied – with the exception of those epidemics resulting from a contagious principle that always remains the same, such as smallpox, measles, etc.

    § 101

It may easily happen that in the first case of an epidemic disease that presents itself to the physician’s notice he does not at once obtain a knowledge of its complete picture, as it is only by a close observation of several cases of every such collective disease that he can become conversant with the totality of its signs and symptoms. The carefully observing physician can, however, from the examination of even the first and second patients, often arrive so nearly at a knowledge of the true state as to have in his mind a characteristic portrait of it, and even to succeed in finding a suitable, homœopathically adapted remedy for it.

    § 102

In the course of writing down the symptoms of several cases of this kind the sketch of the disease picture becomes ever more and more complete, not more spun out and verbose, but more significant (more characteristic), and including more of the peculiarities of this collective disease; on the one hand, the general symptoms (e.g., loss of appetite, sleeplessness, etc.) become precisely defined as to their peculiarities; and on the other, the more marked and special symptoms which are peculiar to but few diseases and of rarer occurrence, at least in the same combination, become prominent and constitute what is characteristic of this malady.1 All those affected with the disease prevailing at a given time have certainly contracted it from one and the same source and hence are suffering from the same disease; but the whole extent of such an epidemic disease and the totality of its symptoms (the knowledge whereof, which is essential for enabling us to choose the most suitable homœopathic remedy for this array of symptoms, is obtained by a complete survey of the morbid picture) cannot be learned from one single patient, but is only to be perfectly deduced (abstracted) and ascertained from the sufferings of several patients of different constitutions.

1 The physician who has already, in the first cases, been able to choose a remedy approximating to the homœopathic specific, will, from the subsequence cases, be enabled either to verify the suitableness of the medicine chosen, or to discover a more appropriate, the most appropriate homœopathic remedy.

Homeopathy offers many medicines which may help in Dengue. These include medicines like Eupatorium-perf, Pyroginum, Rhus-tox, Cedron, Influenzinum, China, Arnica, Belladona, Bryonia, Nux vomica, Sulphur etc. Eupatorium Perfoliatum Q (tincture, 3 to 5 drop dose) will remove the debilitating joint pains and cut short the intensity and duration of the disease. Other potencies may be used according to the intensity of the case. In Andhrapradesh medicines such as Eupatorium200 & Belladonna has cured number of cases.

    Hello Robert,
Thank you! Information on homeopathic treatment for tropical diseases is hard to find for the new practitioner. With experience it becomes easier to treat the person as an individual rather than being confused by the ailment… Yes, using clinical results can ‘muddle’ the picture.

I had dengue fever twice last year (2012). The first time Eupatorium and China were my meds and I recovered quickly. The next time was five months later. I don’t know how I survived. Had to have an oxygen cylinder by my side but thank God no hospital admission. Arsenicum, Ranuncula, and then Bovista pulled me through a very rough month. All my tendons and ligaments seemed to have turned to chewing gum, Bovista cured that.
Thanks for taking up the issue: we learn.

In Philippine etc they are using Tawa Tawa (Euphorbia hirta) [bari dudhi dudhghas dudhi in Indian languages] which is very useful for dengue and for raising the platelet count — available in homeo doses http://www.remedia-homeopathy.com/en/homeopathy/Euphorbia-pilufera/a402160.html [but not in India] … also known as Asthma weed…can use infusions of tawa tawa leaves as tea; also the top part of ‘camote’ sweet potato which can be cut and boiled … green leaves of the papaya tree .. ripe papaya
